Metrology On-Site & Field Services

AMG is a reliable provider of metrology and onsite field services across various industries. Metrology field services are a value-add service that focuses on onsite measurement services. Our team is capable of measuring extremely large parts or assemblies with the use of our Faro Laser Trackers.

Industries we serve include paper and pulp, steel mills, mining, and energy. Metrology is a vital part of our health, safety, and economy. Accurate, precise services are necessary when it comes to measurements and construction management.

Capabilities & Solutions

AMG has experience working in various industries and is willing to work with nearly any type of project. We provide solutions that are of the most benefit to you, depending on each application. Our measurements are accurate and provide information crucial to optimal efficiency and performance, all in the field or with portable CMM.

Roller Alignments

Roller alignment services use a laser tracker in order to adjust the large metal rollers, lining them up to be parallel with the other rollers in a line. This is most commonly found in paper mills and steel mills. Roller alignment can aid in product quality, machine availability, and overall output.

Train Alignments

Train alignments can encompass a variety of services. In general, a train refers to multiple pieces of equipment that are coupled together. A series of rotors either bolted together or coupled is known as a “train.”

Different forms of this can include train electric motors, pumps, and compressors. Other examples of a large steam turbine “train” can include:

High-pressure rotor
Intermediate-pressure rotor
Low-pressure rotor
Generator rotor
Exciter rotor

These rotors/shafts require a well-done alignment to perform at the highest efficiency and will vibrate much less. Concentric placement of the rotors ensures the long service life of important components such as bearings. Train alignments are similar to roller alignments, though train alignments are end to end.

Machining Support

Our probe arms and laser trackers can assist with measurements throughout different machining processes. This type of metrology can verify dimensions either during or after the process. Specific information checked includes how round the subject is, how flat, how concentric, or how much distance is between features.

Base/Foundation Layout

AMG offers services for the measurements of machinery bases for new and replacement equipment alike. We can measure a machinery base for drilling holes to be able to mount the equipment, machine the mounting surface flat while in place, or level the base.

Our team can provide other measurements as well, whether in the field or here at our facility in southeast Houston.

Large Parts Measurements

Large parts and assemblies can be measured with our Faro Laser Trackers if a roller or shaft is 25 feet long. Measurements done this way will be extremely accurate. Large parts measurements can be done in the field or as a “shop.” Our portable CMMs can be set up nearly anywhere. This advanced technology can create results that weren’t often possible before, specifically in the field or in a controlled environment.

GD&T Comparisons

GD&T is a method of highly accurate measurement to call out, analyze, compare, and measure parts and their respective assemblies. It is a way to inspect parts and compare their real dimensions with a specification or drawing. There are a lot of symbols and terms that go into GD&T, and it’s all based on ASME (The American Society of Mechanical Engineers).
